You can look up the weather for a place by its ZIP code, its name, its name with a state or country, or its coordinates. If one place clearly matches what you typed, Weather opens its forecast. If several match, it lists them so you can choose.

#What you can type

You type For example What happens
A ZIP code 90210 or 90210-1234 Opens that ZIP code's forecast
A city Boston Opens it when one place is clearly the one you mean
A city with its state or country Springfield, IL, boston ma, paris, france, london ontario Narrows the search to that place
Coordinates 40.7,-74.0 Opens the nearest ZIP code in the U.S., or the nearest city elsewhere
A state or a country Texas, France Opens that state's or country's page
A place with weather words weather in denver, 90210 forecast, radar boston The words about weather are ignored, and it searches for the place

Capital letters and accents do not matter. Names that are written two ways work either way, such as saint louis and st louis, fort worth and ft worth, or mount and mt.

#Search step by step

  1. Select the search box at the top of any Weather page. It says ZIP code, city or place: 90210, Boston, Paris, France.

  2. Type at least two letters. A list of places appears under the box. For a ZIP code, type the first three or four digits and the ZIP codes that start with them are listed.

The Weather search box with bos typed in and a list of places below it: Boston, Massachusetts first, each with its county or country and a Place label

Suggestions for bos. Each row is a place; the line at the right gives its county or country, and the label says whether it is a place or a ZIP code.

    1. 1Type a ZIP code, city or place
    2. 2A place, with its county or country
    3. 3Whether it is a place or a ZIP code
  3. Select a place, or move down with ↓ and press Enter. To close the list, press Esc.

  4. If you press Enter without choosing, Weather searches for what you typed. One clear match opens its forecast, and more than one shows a list.

A search for a state or a country by name opens its page, which lists its cities. See Browse by state and country.

#When several places share a name

If more than one place fits, such as Springfield, Weather lists them with their county and their population, the best matches first. Places known only by a ZIP code say ZIP code.

The list of places that match springfield: each with its county and population, and a star to follow it

Places named Springfield. The county and the population help you choose, and the star follows a place straight from the list.

  1. 1More than one place has this name
  2. 2Choose a place to open its forecast
  3. 3County and population help you tell them apart
  4. 4Follow it from here

Choose a place to open its forecast. Add a state or country to the search to get there directly, such as Springfield, IL. A name that is far more widely known than the others opens at once: paris opens Paris, France, and london opens London in England. If you want another, add what makes it different, such as paris, tx or london ontario.

#When nothing matches

Weather says No place by that name, and suggests a ZIP code, a city with its state or country, or coordinates. Check the spelling, or type only the first few letters. Weather matches the beginning of a name, so bos finds Boston but bostn does not. If your town is not listed, try its ZIP code or a larger place nearby.

#Common questions

Can I search by street address?

No. Weather looks up ZIP codes, towns and cities, and coordinates. A ZIP code gives the forecast for that area.

Why did I get a ZIP code's page when I typed coordinates?

Coordinates open the nearest ZIP code in the United States, or the nearest city elsewhere, since forecasts are made for those places.

Why does a city name list many places instead of opening one?

Several places share the name and none is clearly the one most people mean. Add a state or country, or choose from the list.
